Happy 90th Birthday Auntie Frazetta
Hey there everyone..It was terrific to see "our" half of the family at the delicious get-together at the Colander, arranged by the Brewers in honour of their mom's 90th Birthday.
Thanks, Glen and Frazer and Les and Dale for getting it all arranged and for treating us to a drink to boot! My, how time flies-Les is looking more like his dad each time I see him, and Dale isn't a skinny little cousin kid anymore, and aside for a little grey up top, Glen hasn't changed a bit. Nice to see Frazer too after him having his big surgery earlier in the year. Also lovely to once again chat Velma, and its been ages since I saw Lynne, (Dale's wife.)
And it was especially nice to get to know Richard and his new soul-mate, Jenna, and her very sweet little guy, Jacob, who ,for a 2!/2 year old, didn't kick up a fuss for the two hours or so that they were there...Pretty good for a little guy!
Plenty of laughs were had by all, as Lynn and RoseAnn teed off on each other about each of them being big Rossland Thrift Shop, shoppers! RA said she would be there at noon on Friday, and L. retorted .."toooooooo-late" Lynn will have it all shopped out much earlier than that!
But beware of any of those lovely gifts for Christmas from those two...especially if it is ladies brand new undies with the name tag scratched out on the back of them...I guess the Matre Miscordie? Long Term care dropped off a ton of them to the Thrift.
The trend is to put your aging mother in the rest home, and make sure she has a week long supply of shiny new undies. HELLO PEOPLES? She aint going to be needing those, BECAUSE SHE HAS GRADUATED TO DEPENDS-( the adult diaper!)
And that, my friends is why the Thrift shop has so many pairs of underpants in stock, all branded with a Matre Miscordie Hospital tag with someones name scritched out!
Now you know what Joyce and I were laughing about at our end of the table, and at the other end , Dee was keeping them in stiches with stories that we couldn't hear, except for the laughter. Rayme and Jeannie , and their two sons, Russell and Ryan were there- with both of those boys all grown up and looking sharp. Glen had us singing Happy Birthday to Auntie Frazzetta , and then we sang it again for Auntie's brother, Crawford who also came to the dinner, and also for Russell whose birthday is next week. The Brewer's even brought in a huge half of Auntie's birthday cake and shared that around for desert...Yummy, but shhhh, I am supposed to be dieting. I just nibbled on it and it was a spicey carrot cake that hit the spot!
I think everyone got to have a little bs with each other, and it was fun to get-together. We do this , what? about every 30 years?
Remember the time we had the Family Reunion in Osooyos? We were all camped on the beach of what I remember to be "Milfoil" Lake...The workers had mowed the top two feet of the weed from beneath the surface of the lake and then dumped it in huge piles on one side of the beach until they could haul it away, out of site for the week-end. Absurd but true, the lake was overtaken with weeds..I wonder if it still is?
The funniest thing I remember is Glen out there BBQ'ing with a paper bag over his head with two eyeholes in it...the unknown chef or somebody ! He kept us cracking up. Then came a hell of a wind storm, and we were rockin and rollin in our new tent trailer. I thought we'd be blown to kingdom come. We had to open all the windows up to allow the wind to blow thru the trailer, instead of blowing the trailer to the Land of Oz..Scary!
Nothing that home-made Kaluha couldn't fix. I brought a batch or two of that down, and we enjoyed that after the kids went to bed!
Speaking of bed...time to hit the hay here. E is already snoring! The drive home with Joyce was just fine- no black ice and it was clear all the way home.
Thanks again for the mini-reunion! Sure was good to see everyone again, and there were only a few cousins missing, which is quite amazing, and Kudos to Auntie for giving us this excuse!

Planked Salmon ( Girard Rainbow)
Ever one to experiment, I thought I'd try "Planked Salmon" tonight, using the fillets of Girard Rainbow that E. caught last week-end. Yes, I bought the natural red cedar plank- $2.25 at Extra foods. ( a method of cooking salmon used by the First Nations people for hundreds of years)
Here is the procedure as it is described on the instruction sheet. Our friend, said it was even better if you had a some smoked wood chips to add to the BBQ, but I don't have those, unless I can find some apple tree twigs and then starting a fire might not be so great. It does mention to keep a spritzer of water on hand in case your "Plank" catches on fire!
The size of your "Plank" will determine how many fillets you can cook. I think 3 will fit nicely on this one, but I bet 4 could squeeze on.
Keep a spray bottle handy in case flaming of the wood occurs.
Extinguish any burning embers of your plank when cooking is finished ( throw it into the snow-bank!)
Well gang...I'll let you know how it turns out and maybe even have a photo or two !
Have a good week-end everyone!

- First, soak your plank overnight , by weighting it down so that it is completely submerged. ( I used a bottle of water)
- Have your fillets ready and fire up the BBQ to high.
- Rub salmon fillets on both sides with Extra virgin olive oil
- Top salmon with a light sprinkling of finely chopped shallots or green or red onion with coursely crushed black peppercorns.
- Top each fillet with a few sprigs of dill and squeeze a little fresh lemon juice all over it.
- Place( smooth-side up) plank on grill and sprinkle lightly with coarse salt. Heat with cover down for 2-3 minutes or until the top of the plank is nearly dry-indicating it is very hot.
- Place salmon fillets on the smooth side of plank. If you have two burners operating, turn one off. Place salmon on the burner side that is turned off. Alternately,if you only have one burner, turn it to the lowest setting.
- Cook salmon with cover down for about 10-12 minutes,or just until fish easily flakes.
- Squeeze a little more lemon juice over top and serve immediately.
Keep a spray bottle handy in case flaming of the wood occurs.
Extinguish any burning embers of your plank when cooking is finished ( throw it into the snow-bank!)
Well gang...I'll let you know how it turns out and maybe even have a photo or two !

Merry Christmas!
The sunshine of yesterday turned the tables on us today and yep- it looks like winter is here to stay ( so says the weatherman, Ron Lakeman) .I awoke to pure white outside...Very white...and grey and more white, snow, clouds, fog, and snowing as we speak.
This is incentive to get back upstairs and work on the damn drapes..I sewed and sewed, using miles of thread to get through 2 and 1/2 yesterday, so just 2 1/2 left and then to get them cleaned and hung. That would be nice, then I could concentrate on Christmas cards and such.. Certain people have them all finished..Kudos to them for being efficient! I looked back in an old journal of mine where I kept a log of my pre-christmas calendar and what I did on which day. In most cases I started around December 10th to do cards and had them done by the 11th. Then I baked on the 12th and 13th, bought presents on the 15th and 16th, wrapped them on the 17th, baked some more for the last minute things like butter tarts and shortbread on the 18th and 19th, then bought Xmas dinner main groceries on the 20th and cleaned house on the 21st and wrapped more gifts on the 22nd, then bought more groceries on the 23rd, and finally decorated the house and tree the night before Christmas. ( I found that with little kids around, that was soon enough !)
We did that for years because with Ukrainian Christmas on January 6th, we kept the tree up till then at the very least. Even under those circumstances we had our problems with trees. Usually E was the "Tree getter". The results were trees of every shape and size and once we even tied two different very skrawny species together and had the tops of both tied onto the cutain rod in the corner of the living room in our Kipling St. house!
It was bad, but so close to Christmas, that we had no choice! Another time a little nephew toppled the whole tree over for an exciting moment, and the tree looked like hell for the rest of the season. You know how the tinsel gets...no fixing that!
Another time , when we lived in Victoria, E. left the tree getting so late, that on Xmas eve he was scurrying around to every Christmas tree lot in the city. The kids and I were getting worried because he left hours ago and wsn't seeming to return! Finally, long after dark, he came home with the most beautiful and expensive tree we ever had..don't ask what it cost, but I think it was in the neighbourhood of $7.oo a foot.
Ahh-so we had no booze that year!
Looks like it is breakfast time, and curtain time shortly there after. Have a good one. Sorry for the lack of real words on here lately, but I have been busy busy and was also fiddling with some settings on my blog. Looks like I need a webpage course if I want to get it right.

Looks nearly like a swimming pool, the water was so clear today. You could see to the bottom of the lagoon.

Those snapdragons are still in full bloom in my flower baskets! Amazing for this time of year. This photo can fool one into thinking it was 25* out....not! (more like 8*)

My clematis has developed these fuzzy wuzzy seed heads...I am trying to dry some -don't ask for what!
