A Cord of Zuchs

I made a grave error by neglecting to go to the garden for a day or two. Yes, it is serious.
While I have been making jam, going to town, shopping, cooking dinner, doing laundry etc., etc., the Secret Society of the Greens, have been working at break-neck speed.
You see, the green leaves of everything is growing larger and larger to serve as a camoflage to what is really going on somewhere closer to the ground. It is a real plot, a real big plot. Big and getting bigger.
The Greens of the Garden are trying to take over.
What used to be delectible little six inch zuchs two days ago-today,are some unearthly dark green gargantuous creatures piling up one upon the other, like logs stuck in a dam, but hidden under those giant leaves.
Move a leaf, and voila- you have a Cord of Zuchs! I nearly fell on my keister...Like where the hell did they come from..I just picked nine of them a couple of days ago..Help me...help me...help me..I am trapped in Zuchiniville or is that Zucciniville?
Yes, yes, I am going to make the relish...I have the ingredients and enough zuchs for a hundred batches..so if there is anyone who is Zuccini-less..just let me know...They ship well on the bus for under ten dollars...In fact, stick a stamp or two on them, carve in the address and with express post, they could be at your door in a few days...
Elli dropped off a box of beautiful red plums the other day---eat more than four and you can have a self induced high colonic! Potent little guys!
I did a double batch of jam with them and the jammy turned out more like jelly..a lovely clear red, streaked with the odd piece of brighter red plum skin...and very tasty...Sonia will like this...
I have the raspberries in the basement dripping into a pot...raspberry jelly is next, then the relish.
Lawrence was here today when I arrived home from town, and as soon as I walked in the door..he was wailing that he needed help with something right now. Now I am thinking that he glitched up the computer, but no- that wasn't it.
He swung open the fridge door and dragged out a beautiful big fat fish in a plastic bag, saying he caught it, but didn't know how to clean it and so he brought it here...and could I clean it?
In the next moment I was holding the fish and he was heading out the door to bring in the groceries...UH-UH Buddy!
You stay here and learn how to gut a fish! Then we'll both bring in the grub!
It was a good four or five pound Dolly Varden...just as pink and fresh as could be..
Needless to say, it turned into the main course for our dinner.. I BBQ'd it Sprinkled on this new seasoning that Joyce brought me..called Dilly Lemon with Parsley...Yum...served it with some Q'd potatoes from the garden and "Barby-Wokked" Veggies, plus a salad of butter lettuce topped with rings of red onion that I marinated in a raspberry vinagrette with poppy seeds.I sprinkled on toasted chopped almonds and toasted sesame seeds, as well as canned mandarin oranges...perfect addition to the fish and veggies. burp.
G'night...everyone is in their beddies...

Margo's Zuccini Relish

Here is a relatively easy recipe for the best hot-dog/meat relish that I have ever tasted. Remember to adjust the taste of the mustard mixture to something you like ( eg. I added a little more sugar and chopped jalapeno peppers for a little spice...Worked out great!
Margo's Zucchini Relish with Cauliflower

Put all the vegetables through the food chopper before measuring
8 cups zucchini
8 cups onions
2 red and 2 green peppers( add 3or 4 chopped jalapenos if you like it with a bite!)
1 large head of cauliflower

Cover the above with brine made of one cup of pickling salt to 1 ½ gallons (18cups)of water and let it stand overnight
Drain the next day ( drain well or you’ll have too much liquid

Mix together first, then bring to a boil for 2-3 minutes, stirring slowly:
6 cups white vinegar
7 cups white sugar
¾ cups flour
¼ cup dry mustard ( add more if you want it more mustardy)
1 Tbsp celery seed
1 Tbsp mustard seed
2 Tbsps tumeric
Add vegetables and bring back to a boil
Pour into sterilized jars and seal with paraffin or by using the canner( cover jars with water and bring to a boil, boil for fifteen minutes)

Nelson Summer SongFest - August 16 to August 20, 2004

Nelson Summer SongFest - August 16 to August 20, 2004
Bring a Lunch and a Lawn Chair and listen to the noon hour concerts in the quad in front of the White Building next to the Courthouse...every day this week. Also there are various performances at the Capital Theatre and the churches in the city, each night. Call the Capital Theatre for more details.

Back at it...

So, to continue where ever it was that I left off.
The "Big Whitey" blew in fast and somewhat furious and drove the rain sideways -right into every room that had an open window on the south side. This isn't the "normal" direction for a storm to come from, thus when it does, it is a doozey. The suite floor was soaked, as was my old vacuum cleaner that I had left outside momentarily while I checked my blog...
To say the least, the rainfall lasted much longer than five minutes - closer to 45 minutes which was good.
Saves me from watering lawns this morning as puddles are still evident everywhere.
I took the opportunity to snap some flower shots this morning while the flowers still had water sprinkles on them. I'll post the best of the best later.
Back to our visitors of this past week-end:
John and Ronda arrived Friday afternoon, in time to enjoy some beach time before dinner. These two love-birds certainly seemed to be making the most of every moment together! Good to see John so happy and Ronda too. Everyone deserves to have a companion, as life is too lonely by yourself. Whether it is six minutes, six hours, six months, six years or sixty- the time spent being happy is the most important.
And talk about happy- along came the ultimate happy girl: Annette!
She arrived on Saturday night in time for our campfire. It was a beautiful evening out...loads of stars and still very warm-until the fire burned right down.
Her and I decided that a "tub" was in order after John and Ronda finished their tubbing under the stars. Well, we blabbed for hours and had a great visit while we watched the skies and talked about how great her job is going. There is another ultra happy gal. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to see people radiate their joy-especially when it is my own children.
Thus the week-end was a good one...only problem was the damn fire alarm up in the suite.
All of the new alarms are super sensitive to large amounts of humidity and tend to let you know about it in the middle of the night! It all started with poor Sonia being startled out of her shorts last summer, then it happened to us, and this week-end it was poor Eileen and Austin jumping up to the alarm screaming above their heads. Eileen reprted that it went off "Hundreds!" of times during the night. Austin had the good sense to disconnect it, but then who wants to be without a fire alarm these days?( I fixed them up with a battery operated model)
I then called our favourite electrician, Tweedy, and asked what gives, since he was the one who installed them.
It appears that we weren't the only ones affected. Nearly every person that had them installed, also had them screaming over the high humidity and had also voiced their complaints. Thus the installer is in touch with the supplier and the supplier is in touch with the manufacturer and blah, blah, blah! Face it, we are at the bottom of the heap, but apparently if and when anything comes of it, Tweedy will let us know....Yep! In the meantime, we have to vacuum the hell out of them. Yes, I'll remember to do that regularly every three months. Apparently dust and bugs stick to the humidity that is stuck on a little cell that activates the alarm.. so no showers before bed, everyone!
Today, I have "Tub-Cleaning" to do. This means the removal of all of the beach that has accumulated in the bottom of the hot-tub...Now if it were to completely dry out, I could vacuum it...yeah right..
More thunder showers are predicted for today so I better get hopping.

Looks like CUPE and the city have a tentative settlement to be ratified. They will be voting on it today. Minor hockey is very pleased, as they were about to fold if the ice wasn't going to be available for practice. The lockout has gone on for over two months-pretty serious and hard on everyone, except the tourists- They didn't have to experience getting a parking ticket when they were one minute past their meter time...No-one missed the "Meter-Readers"!
Also, it appears that dogs have returned to Baker street with no shitty after effects. That was another topic heavily debated.
Last but not least, I had a lovely chat with Sue from P. G. ,who sent me the beautiful bouquet of birthday flowers. She is a super sonically busy gal with her councilling business and also with her new found intersest...painting. Kudos go out to her for being able to do it all! She is one to admire- and a dear friend even though we aren't able to see one another too often these days.
Now, what to do with the box of red plums that Elli brought me yesterday? And then there is the excessive amounts of Zuccini. I'll make some of that delicious relish of Margos. I just need some cauliflower. Let me know if you need the recipe!

Delinquent and Guilty

Yes, Steve, I've been not the Blogger Quintessential of late, but hey...its been ultra busy arround here...and HOT-DAMN HOT..TORRID HOT...We've had near record breaking temps which explains why a day at the beach is better than a day in the blogmobile! Eileen and Austin and their grankids , Jordy and Jacklin, arrived Thursday afternoon, followed by John and Ronda on Friday afternoon, followed by Annette on Saturday night. So it was a little busy..I mean we had to swim and drink beer and BBQ Steak and Eat Chicken Wings and lay on the beach and tuff it out best we could under the circumstances... campfire at night, lots of S'mores, a little hot-tubbing...more beer...
Life is good around "Club Mom's"
Now,as I speak about the heat, a big cloud has just descended upon us ,let out a clap of thunder, and is dumping great raindrops. I'll be surprised if it lasts for more than five minutes. I stepped outside to rescue my lawn chair cushions and it is like a sauna out there... about 30* and raining...Rain is good,as it is bone dry evverwhere and the thunder means that lightening is striking somewhere...
I'm praying it doesn't touch down anywhere near here.. Think I'll go sit on the balcony and take a look see.
Before I do, however, I just wanted to say, that we had a great time with everyone..nice to see Eileen and Austin back up here after at least five years, and their grandkids were cute..busy ,but content and happy to play in the water like any other normal kids.
ok gotta go now... wind and something or other is upon us...windows are open in the suite...
