-14* and we are hunkered down
Only thing is that I have to get up early to take poochy-woochy to the vet. Seems she has developed something the size of a wart on the side of her body... No amount of poking and squishing has changed it, so I better see whats up, before I farm her out to L&L's POOCHY HOTEL
I am nearly all packed...bought two new skirts at Wally's World today, so that will have to do for the formal part of the event....My suitcase is half empty...guess I'll just have to go shopping ...never hurts to bring home a few treasures...especially ceramic ones...or jewellry, or fabric...maybe even a new pair of thongs...NOT those ones that go where the sun don't shine either!
E will be watching for those on the beach..
G'nite all

Planning a trip to Van in Feb?
Blowing in the Wind...Snow that is...White Stuff- Lots of it... Cold...Did I say Blowing..
It was a cold trip to town today...just a lot of blowing snow and cold wind when you stepped out of the truck. I stocked up on little items to take south with us...you know, a couple of bottles of Canuck H2), some Nutribars and a bag of Miss Vickies Salt and Vinegar...plus the pepto bismo, gravol and 45 sunblocker...oh yes, and some new toepolish..to match the new swimsuit that sort of fits...I washed both of our Tilly hats today as they come in handy when you need a quality sunhat...especially good for those tours or boat rides, should we ever go on one.
When we were heading off to Ohnny Kai Isla that one trip, they hearded us into these giant row-like -boats like slaves and when we were at about 24 people, the captain started it up and off we sailed out into the turquoise blue water..No one asked for life-jackets which we could have used right in the boat as the waves were breaking over the bow and dousing E., especially. His saviour was his Tilly Hat...it kept most of the salty sploosh from drenching him. Word of caution...sit at the front or the back , but not in the middle! We know that now!
My sister said that her friend questioned the lack of lifejackets and the fellow remarked back to her that the sharks eat you...life jacket or no!
Comforting eh?
I better start the task of packing...how much? of what? how hot?..80-90*? Mmm sounds like a bathing suit is enuf!
Toodaloo

-18* and Damn Cold
Not as cold as say PG...-41*, I heard, but it is still darn cold out, and it sounds like Aquila is running low on power, so douse the Xmas lites and hand scrub all your clothes and no more playing with the power tools. Might as well unplug the freezer and throw all the food into a cardboard box out onto your porch!!
Why is that I have three fridges and a freezer running in the middle of the coldest winter ever?
Why is it that ducks and seagulls are so stupid that their little legs freeze right into the lake when it gets this cold...don't they notice that swimming is getting too difficult???
My daughter, S. had a million calls at today at work from concerned citizens from all over that were reporting ducks and seagulls being frozen ( still alive, but unable to swim) in various lakes around the country side. So the story she related to me was about two CO's, who one year tried to rescue a pair of white swans who also apparently froze to the lake's surface.
Well, these two fellows struggled with their canoe for hours in the freezing cold, breaking ice on this isolated lake to get out to where the frozen swans were; nearly freezing to death, themselves. After much thrashing with paddles and manouvering, they finally got the canoe in position so they could smash the ice around the swans and free them.
At that very moment, the swans, sensing danger, began beating their wings against the ice and flopping about as best they could and like two bullets, they shot out of the icey lake and frozen water and flew off into the sunset before the CO's had nary a chance to rescue them.
End of story.
Moral?
Don't phone anyone when you see a duck stuck in the ice, because there is a very good chance that no one will risk their life again to rescue it.
Other funny story compliments of S&S:
This will be short.
Never put 50 lbs of unshelled walnuts in the old garage and forget about them for a couple of months.
You may not be paying attention to them, but some other little furry critters are...
It was described as what must have been" WALNUT BONUS DAY ; " for the squirrels and rats and raccoons, or whoever it was that so efficiently cracked all fifty pounds of nuts...only leaving a trail of shells...to perhaps be dealt with next spring..
End of Story
Moral??

Dried Wing Recipe 10 minutes to prepare --2 hours to cook
Have spread out, as many chicken wings as you wish to cook up... If you want to get fancy, you can cut off the wing tips and discard them and cut the drummette off the wingy part if you'd just like to cook those as separate parts ( the wing doesn't then bend up and burn)
Have ready: One broiler pan sprayed with Pam on the bottom and on the rack. Turn your oven to 350*F
Once the wings are spread out, coat them fairly heavily with the seasonings you like.
I use garlic ( salt or less if I am using the powder), Hy's seasoning with no MSG, and any Tex Mex or Cajun spice if you like a little zip to it. Make sure the wings are well coated on all sides , then arrange them in a single layer on the broiler rack and place on a middle rack in the heated oven. I then pour a large glassful of water (or more if the broiler pan can hold it) into the bottom of the broiler pan ( just at the side or through the top rack) If you don't add water, the grease will drip off the wings and create a massive stink!
Close up the oven and set the timer for 30 minutes...add more water and set the timer for another 20 or 30 minutes. When the wings have cooked on one side for an hour, turn them over and repeat the process...I usually cook them for about a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours...making sure the base of the broiler pan always has some water in it. ( This makes for easy clean up.) Sometimes I sprinkle the wings with a bit of course salt at about 1 and a half hours to give them a little more salty flavour...but go easy on the salt or don't do it at all if you aren't into a sodium fix.
The wings come out very crisp and without all their fat, and they are tasty enough to serve a bunch as an appy. Enjoy... any questions...email me. Chrissy gave me the recipe...so thanks to her...as we have used it countless times since the summer...

-17* and Frickin - Freezin Out There
Call us "the fridge " today, as it is cold for us . The sun is has turned the mountain tops a radiant pink in this late afternoon, but that is the only sign of anything that might normally have been associated with warmth. okay, decorations are away except for the snowmen and the two reindeer lawn ornaments. At least 8 huge tuibbies of Christmas related stuff...all stored on the bottom of the pile with summer stuff ready...HA! Summer will be some time before it arrives around here, though we will experience at least a week of it in Mexico pretty soon.
Today is our 35th anniversary...My how time flies when you are having fun! 25 years ago, E and I were sitting on a beach in Mexico watching the sun set, as we drank a bottle of champagne under a palapa...hmmm...fond memories...Now , back to reality to see if I can locate a new bathing suit prior to leaving.
S and kids did make it back home, but not without a treacherous drive from the ferry to their place. S. said she slid back down the hill after only making it half way up to her place. She turned around an came into the crescent via the other route. E. also had a a dandy of a trip out of Van...many cars off the road due to black ice, so he took it easy, at least on the free-way.. he stopped to see his mom, who he thought was walking much better than when she was here for Christmas... ( Maybe they put her on a new drug??)
We were going to go over to the BBI for a boca and a beer, but the prevailing cold has changed our minds. E. made us a huge bowl of popcorn and I think a beer would be in order. I browned a roast and put it in the oven for our cnadle-light diiner that we will have at home..
I am experimenting with the colours and styles of my blog and had to start over again after it turned ugly. ( thus no links)
